Welcome to Arboratory at Pique on September 26, in the Studio at Arts Court. This room is a roughly 40-foot square with black walls and floors, and a theatre grid overhead. You entered through doors at one of the corners of the room, so much of the space is in front and to the right of where you came in.
Wooden forms and artworks are placed throughout the space - some are suspended, some are sitting on the ground or hanging from the wall. Suspended sculptures always have something on the floor to cue you - so if you feel the edge of a carpet or a vinyl cutout of fungal roots on the floor, move slowly and sweep around the space ahead of you for something suspended near chest or head height.
In the centre of the space is a very large, suspended spiral of branches hanging over a 10-foot circular carpet. Move very slowly and with caution, as the branches come down low and at all angles. It is possible to lay on the carpet or to stand in the centre of the branches as if you were the trunk of the tree, if you wish.
Many of the sculptures emit sound - this sound can guide you as you find the next work. Each sculpture is accompanied by a notebook containing written transcripts and other information about the piece. All of this information is also available on the website, which you can navigate independently or via QR codes found on the inside cover of the notebook at each station. The notebooks are attached with a string either to the sculpture around waist height, or to the carpet below them.
Lastly, this exhibition is part of my thesis research, and there is an opportunity to offer anonymous feedback from your perspective as an audience member should you so wish. There are large sheets of paper for writing in the space, and the same questions are also available in a Google Form linked on this website or via a QR code.
There are exhibition minders around should you ever require assistance. Please step into this acoustic arboretum, explore and enjoy.
