The Paramorph Collective is formed of performer-composers and multidisciplinary artists An Laurence 安媛 and Kim Farris-Manning. Their album All we’re made of is borrowed (Redshift records, 2023) has been described as a “strong, provocative, and accomplished debut, well worth seeking out … lovely, urgent, and unorthodox …” (Night After Night, Steve Smith), “[of] extraordinary combinations of instruments and voices in what promises much for their musical future.” (Harmonious world).
Their work has been presented by Women from Space (Toronto), re:Naissance/Lucky penny (Vancouver) and Sing the North (virtual). The “kernel” of Paramorph’s artistry is sound; however, the adventurous collective doesn’t restrain from bringing in other expressive forms to sculpt works according to their vision, whether it be poetry/spoken words, animations and visuals, performance art, etc. Through their work, Kim and An Laurence seek the ambiguous, the delicate, or the unsaid. The name “Paramorph” comes from the mineralogical term of the same name, designating the process of transformation of a mineral through the disruption and reorganization of its molecules. The choice refers to the collective’s wish to transform oneself through rearranging inner feelings or thoughts, and to transform a group of collaborators and the audience through meaningful exchanges and by constantly seeking new and different perspectives.
