The pilot project ran from July-August 2025 in Ottawa, ON
Queer Youth Choiris a creative music-making group in Ottawa's queer community. Open to all youth ages 14-18 who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+, queer spawn, and/or allies, this group builds music skills in a choral-education environment where youth have agency over their learning and musicianship. The choir rehearsals incorporate games and breakout sessions to explore things like theory, movement, music appreciation, composition and arranging, etc. based on participants’ interests and backgrounds. Summer 2025 marked the inaugural pilot of this project. Stay tuned for future editions!
This project is supported by WARP, a paid learning and mentorship opportunity co-produced and co-facilitated by a consortium of DIY music and arts organizations in the Algonquin-Anishnaabe territory. Their goal is to equip and support early- and mid-career individuals and artist collectives with the essentials of project development, providing DIY organizers with the resources and tools they need to create safe(r), more accessible, and more sustainable experiences. Kim learned so much and is so grateful to have had their support in launching this project!
TESTIMONIALS "This experience was an extremely fun way to spend my summer, it gave me a reason to show up and socialize with others in my age range. It kept me engaged and in good spirits, I would absolutely recommend this to any queer youths in the area!"
"Queer youth choir made me feel safe and respected all the time, it was an amazing experience to be apart of a choir and to practice confidence singing with others. I enjoyed making friends of fellow queer/allied youth! I love everyone here and the effort they put into making everyone safe !!!!!!!!! ✨ "
